Changable Tray {Guest Blogger}

Hi, I'm Lauren and I blog over at Tutus & Tea Parties. My daughter Bug and I love to learn through play during the day but when {or in these days...if} she's off in bed, I'm up doing big girl crafting! I'd love for you to come by and see what else I have created & maybe take a stab at it yourself!

I'm so happy to be here today to show you this project! I hope you like it and give it a try.

Materials:

  • Square or Rectangular Wooden Tray {I got my from Michaels with my 40% off coupon!}
  • Paint that is neutral or that will match your fabric choices {under $1 each}
  • *Plexiglass cut to the measurements of the inside of your tray. {I went to Home Depot and they cut it to the size you want for free! Mine ended up being about $2}
  • Modge Podge
  • Foam Brush
  • *Fabric cut slightly larger than your plexiglass {depending on your fabric choice this should be anywhere from under$1-$3}
{*Note: The idea for this project is that the plexiglass will be covered in fabric. Make a few and you can change up your tray. To make more than one you will need that many times the materials except for the paint, tray & Modge Podge/Foam Brush.*}
Process:

Paint your tray. I used yellow. I should have picked something more neutral...but I like bold & bright things! Let it dry.

Now onto the plexiglass! Make sure you iron your fabric before starting this part.

Spread a thin layer of Modge Podge on top of the plexiglass. Place your fabric over it face down and smooth out.

Spread a thicker layer of Modge Podge over the "wrong" side of the fabric in an up and down motion. Be sure to get the edges. There will be some fabric overhanging the plexiglass on all sides. We will take care of this later.

Now using a back and forth motion, apply another layer of Modge Podge.

Wash your foam brush and leave it alone for 12 hours! I know...that's a long time! If you're like me and can't stand waiting you might want to do this before bed so you can wake up & do the next step!

Using a rotary cutter or a scissor, trim the excess material. If your edges aren't secured down you can apply some more Modge Podge and let dry for about 20 mins.  - an hour.

Using 200 grit sandpaper, sand the edges {from the back in a downward motion} so they are smooth if needed.

Pop it into your tray and make some more! Now you can have a cool looking tray that can be swapped out for a different pattern for different occasions! How awesome is that?!

Think of the possibilities here! You can make one for each holiday or each season. How fun it that?!

If you decide to make this I'd love for you to share with me! I always welcome emails of your creations or you can share it on my Facebook page. I have an album over there for showing off your work!
